23 July 2007

Liverpool based developer Iliad and the internationally renowned Glenn Howells Architects have scooped a coveted, national ‘Project Winner’ award at the 2007 National Housing Design Awards for their Rotherham scheme ‘The Old Market’.

The prestigious National Design Awards ceremony - administered by Design for Homes, a not-for-profit limited company advised by a cross industry Board of Directors that champions good design in the housing industry - was held on 19 July 2007 at the Banqueting House in Whitehall, central London.

Richard McCarthy, Director General of Programmes, Policy and Innovation from the Communities and Local Government ministerial team presented the award for The Old Market, which part of the initial phase of ‘Rotherham Renaissance’, an ambitious 25-year regeneration programme that will transform Rotherham town centre.

In late 2005 Iliad were appointed by Rotherham MBC as chosen developer in association with Glenn Howells Architects to carry out the ‘ Westgate Demonstrator Project’ scheme – now collectively called the ‘All Saints’ Quarter’. Work began on the site in late 2006.

The Old Market is the first site to be developed within the five-site All Saints’ Quarter which spearheads the Rotherham Renaissance initiative and aims to establish a vibrant, re-populated and re-vitalised riverside town centre creating new high-quality buildings and maintaining and refurbishing the best of the existing architecture.

When completed, the All Saints’ Quarter will provide 154 new apartments and 126,000sq ft of mixed commercial, retail, leisure and office accommodation The Old Market - scheduled for completion in summer 2008 - will create 44 one, two and three bedroom apartments on four storeys with ground-floor retail accommodation built around a raised internal courtyard. With a prominent frontage onto the River Don and in close proximity to the historic All Saints’ Church the building is at the core of Rotherham’s regeneration.

The striking building was praised by Design for Homes for having ‘elevations which give life to the public realm’ and utilising building materials that ‘will project economic strength, just as the charter anticipates’.

Bill Addy, Business Development Director of the Iliad Group said,

‘Both Iliad and GHA are encouraged that this project has received the recognition that we feel it deserves and we are proud to be involved in such an important initiative such as Rotherham Renaissance. Not only are we contributing towards the regeneration of our home city, but we are now extending our expertise into other Northern areas.
