Consent has been granted by Liverpool City Council to create Europe’s largest media wall in Liverpool city centre, subject to a satisfactory independent risk assessment.

Land Securities, owner of Liverpool’s St John’s and Clayton Square shopping centres, in partnership with Ocean Outdoor Media and F&P Media Group, are to create the unique structure, that when completed will have a span of 90 metres, a height of 10 metres and will sit in front of the St John’s Centre at its Lime Street frontage directly opposite Lime Street Station.

The screen wall will wrap over the façade of the Lime Street elevation of St John’s Shopping Centre creating a visually stunning reception for the hundreds of thousands of visitors that arrive in Liverpool from the Lime Street mainline station.

Work on building the media screen wall will commence in the next few weeks to ensure that it will be completed and operational in time for the commencement of Liverpool’s Capital of Culture celebrations in 2008.

The bespoke structure houses a 31 metre by 7 metre state-of-the-art high-definition media screen at its centre flanked with static media images on either side. Land Securities has offered use of the static media space to Liverpool’s Culture Company for the creation of a prominent welcome statement to the visitors who are expected to come to the city in its Capital of Culture year.

The technology used within the screen will generate an ultra-bright image of one billion colours that will be visible even in broad daylight via the use of high performance LED technology using the latest advances in electronic engineering techniques.

Nick Davis, Development Director at Land Securities commented,

“The media screen wall, the largest of its kind in Europe, will be a dramatic first for Liverpool and for Land Securities. We are proud to be bringing this unique, dynamic structure to the city in its Capital of Culture year. Its creation is in direct response to the City Councils ‘Look of the City’ campaign and is a demonstration of our ongoing commitment to Liverpool and the first step in the reinvestment plans that we have for our portfolio.

Land Securities have been active within the retail market throughout Merseyside for over 40 years and manage over 1 million sq ft of highly successful retail space within the region including shops on Lord Street and Aintree Racecourse Retail Park as well as Clayton Square Shopping Centre and St Johns”.

Liverpool City Council Leader Warren Bradley said,

“This amazing new design will enhance St John’s Shopping centre and put Liverpool back where it belongs on the big screen. The screen will enable visitors and local people alike to see what’s happening in the City in 2008. This project has been possible through joint working by the City Council and Land Securities.”
