George Wimpey North West have acquired the former "Ogden’s" Imperial Tobacco factory complex on Liverpool’s West Derby Road and are to submit a planning application to redevelop the site and create over 200 new homes.
The 8.5acre site on the fringe of the city centre was the final remaining tobacco factory in Liverpool and closed in March this year. The Ogden’s Tobacco site originally opened in 1899 producing snuff and pipe tobacco. In latter years it packaged Golden Virginia tobacco.
Leading house builder George Wimpey plan to refurbish the Grade 2 listed, former-office building with its landmark clock-tower and convert the property in to one and two bedroom apartments. The remainder of the site will become a mix of stylish and contemporary one and two bedroom apartments, two bedroom mews, three bedroom semi-detached houses and four bedroom detached houses.
The award-winning developer intends to create a new residential area that provides homes for all ages and all stages of life.
Subject to planning permission the developer will commence site works later this year with the first homes ready for occupation in mid 2008.
Andrew Ferguson, Senior Land Manager for George Wimpey, said, "This site has been at the heart of the local community for over a century and we are thrilled at the prospect of bringing much needed new, quality homes into this area of the city. Our carefully planned proposals will respectfully refurbish and redevelop the listed office building and preserve the local landmark clock tower".
Marie Wilkinson, Sales Director for George Wimpey said, "Building new homes for all ages and price-brackets will encourage local people to stay within the area and bring new life into this area of the city.
