National Archives Refurbishment Finishes on Kew thanks to JONAP
23 June 2008
A celebratory event was held at the National Archives, Kew, London on Wednesday 25 June 2008 to mark the successful completion of their refurbishment project.
The 9,000sq ft refurbishment, including all construction and fit-out, was delivered by London based JONAP and utilised their unique ‘Roundtable Management’ in order to bring the project in to completion on time and within budget.
This high profile project was undertaken whilst the building remained open to the public. Disruption was therefore minimised and health and safety concerns maximised. This complex task involved dividing the floor space into 12 separate areas of operation run partially concurrently and interdependent upon each other to achieve completion and segregating the records viewing floor with a great emphasis being placed on health and safety and the careful choreography of protective screens.
Refurbishment works included creating a new welcome area with a bespoke lighting feature and welcome desk, the creation of a new multi media talks and presentation centre and installing a state of the art cctv monitoring facility featuring 91 cameras placed within public areas. Other works included installing glazed and solid partitioning to create private study areas, creating new public toilets and updating and refurbishing the existing lighting systems whilst retaining the existing lighting cases and fitting PIR sensors to the lights as an energy saving element.
Efforts were made to recycle or refurbish where possible. Some of the existing carpets, for instance, were retained and cleaned and those in need of replacement were replaced with carpets manufactured with an element of recycled material.
John O’Neill, Executive Chairman of JONAP said,
‘We are very proud to have been involved in the refurbishment of the National Archives. Utilising our Roundtable Management system allowed us to bring a higher level of coordination and control to the project in order to ensure its success and deliver on budget and on time’
